Kamakhya Temple: The Kamakhya Temple, located in Guwahati, is widely regarded as one of India’s most famous temples and a major attraction in the area. It is part of the 51 shakti peeths, with the Kamakhya temple being one of the oldest and dedicated to the goddess Mother Kamakhya. Positioned on the Nilachal hill in the western part of Guwahati, it holds great significance as a pilgrimage site, particularly for those who follow tantric traditions. This shrine is considered one of the most sacred shakti peethas, as it is believed to be the actual place where the goddess’ womb fell, symbolizing immense female strength and fertility. Every year, during the June Ambubachi Mela, hundreds of devotees flock to the temple. According to legend, Goddess Sati immolated herself after her husband, Lord Shiva, faced disrespect in her family’s home. Overwhelmed with grief, Lord Shiva carried her body, causing chaos in the cosmos. When Lord Vishnu used his divine Sudarshana chakra to calm the enraged God by severing Sati’s body, the scattered pieces gave rise to the shakti peethas across India. The construction of the current temple building is credited to the Ahom kings. Notably, the shikhara, resembling a beehive, is adorned with sculpted panels depicting Hindu deities and goddesses.

Regional Science Centre: The Regional Science Center, located in Guwahati, Assam, is considered one of the top tourist attractions in the city. Established in 1994 at Khanapara in the Kamrup district, the center aims to fulfill children’s curiosity for scientific exploration and educate them about the impact of science and technology. The museum features captivating exhibits that cater to both children and science enthusiasts, covering a wide range of scientific knowledge from the past to the present. Notable attractions at the museum include the coalmine, fun mirror, cliff lift, and magic tap. It houses valuable artifacts, equipment, and documents showcasing the positive influence of science on society. Additionally, the museum offers interactive displays, a circular maze, a science park, a dedicated kids’ area, and a park dedicated to prehistoric life. One of its key features is providing science education to the local student population, and it also organizes performances, camps, competitions, and conferences to promote scientific learning among youngsters. The center boasts both indoor and outdoor exhibitions, with the Fun Science Center offering 50 engaging scientific displays and the coal mine providing a comprehensive overview of coal mining. The park-based museum allows students to interact with various exhibits, and the MIG 21 corner showcases a variety of aircraft.

 Umananda Temple: Located on Umananda Island, also known as Peacock Island, in the Brahmaputra River, opposite the Kamrup Deputy Commissioner’s office, is the Umananda Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Guwahati, Assam. This island is believed to be the smallest inhabited riverine island globally and can be reached by country boats from the banks of the Brahmaputra. The temple, situated on the Bhasmacala cliff, was constructed in the 17th century by King Gadadhar Singha. The temple hosts the well-known Shiva Chaturdasi festival annually, attracting a large number of devotees. It is open every day of the week and offers free admission from 6:00 am to 7:30 pm. There are no special arrangements for online puja booking, and darshan is available free of charge to all devotees. The Umananda Temple is located 22 kilometers from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport and 2 kilometers from Guwahati Railway Station. The temple, built in the Kamrup style, features a red-domed structure and elegantly designed stairs leading to the sanctum sanctorum, where a miniature Shiva Linga can be seen. The mountain on which the Umananda temple is situated is known as Bhasmakal.

Assam State Zoo and Botanical Garden: The Assam State Zoo, located in the Hengrabari Forest Area at the heart of Guwahati, is considered one of the top attractions in the city. Often referred to as the “green lung” of Guwahati, the zoo is nestled in a lush, forested area approximately 6 kilometers south of the Brahmaputra River, the largest river in the state. It boasts beautiful landscaped gardens, a wide variety of species, and a serene atmosphere, all of which have significantly contributed to the ecological framework of the region. The zoo has expanded over the years to accommodate more species and has even established a charming botanical garden nearby. With its diverse collection of unusual and native creatures, including the iconic one-horned rhinoceros native to the Indian subcontinent, the zoo attracts over 500,000 visitors and wildlife enthusiasts annually. The government has initiated various captive breeding programs aimed at increasing the population of endangered animals such as one-horned rhinos, gharials, and white tigers. As one of the most important ex-situ conservation sites in the country, the zoo is also involved in numerous outreach, animal care, and awareness projects.
